Episode 2 Cast Comments
After the post-recording of "MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM THE ORIGIN II: Artesia's Sorrow," we received some comments from all the cast members.

What did you think when you saw episode 1, "Blue-Eyed Casval"?
I thought it was wonderfully well-made. This must be the "new standard" that Mr. Yasuhiko talks about.
Tell us about your thoughts after you finished the post-recording of episode 2.
This was my first time playing the character of Édouard Mass. I volunteered to play him, but he was a pretty formidable opponent.
Was there anything in your performance that you were particularly mindful of? Was there anything different from episode 1?
Rather than being mindful, I would say I attempted it. But as for how much I succeeded...
Do you have a message for everyone awaiting the release of episode 2?
I haven't seen the finished product, so honestly I'm anxious. Going from Casval to Édouard, and then to Char Aznable... I'm still on a journey, but then I eagerly hope to have a message to give to everyone.

What did you think when you saw episode 1, "Blue-Eyed Casval"?
It was a masterpiece. I want to watch it over and over again. Each time creates new impressions, and each time I gain more empathy for Casval. He doesn't say it in words, but his bitterness, his sorrow, his pain, his yearning for his mother… they all came together.

I'm still feeling the tension. I cheered myself on, saying, "You can do it."

Though she's still Artesia, she's also being reborn as Sayla. She retains her innocence, but circumstances and events are turning her into a grown-up. Maybe it's part of that process, but she distinguishes between calling Casval "Édouard," "brother," and "Casval."

The gears of destiny are turning faster and faster. Anger, hatred, sorrow! And amid this, love and affection, as someone weeps in their heart. I think this story is also the point at which the girl called Sayla Mass is born, so please do see it in the theater.

What did you think when you saw episode 1, "Blue-Eyed Casval"?
I first saw it at the audition. So when I heard I'd won this role, I was really thrilled! For me, it was just as if I'd been able to participate in the original Gundam. The Char played by Mr. Ikeda is basically a god to people of my generation.

I was definitely relieved. After seeing "THE ORIGIN I: Blue-Eyed Casval" in the theater, I was aware of its high level of perfection, and I tackled it with the feeling that I wanted to do as good a job as possible.

How would I be able to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the presence of Édouard (Casval)? I was at my wits' end. I thought it would be good if I could skillfully express a personality completely opposite to his.

Personally, my heart is racing. Even as I look forward to the release with the same feelings as all the fans, I guess I have to pull myself together and get ready for episode 3.

What did you think when you saw episode 1, "Blue-Eyed Casval"?
Degwin and the other characters have a lot of close-ups with lively expressions, and there is also a dark undercurrent to the words they speak.

It was like a sudden separation from a loved one. Throughout the entire story, there were many episodes that left a strong impression in my mind. Now, all at once, I've developed a definite emotional involvement in the work.
Was there anything in your performance that you were particularly mindful of? Was there anything different from episode 1?
I tried not to get too emotionally involved in the scenes with his beloved son. But when I was there on the spot, knowing how they would end up being parted in the future, my heart was shattered to pieces.

A demonic hand is striking at the siblings Édouard and Sayla. The continuous intensity and terror overwhelmed any of the battles and hand-to-hand combat scenes. And eventually, the youthful forms of the next-generation main characters will appear before your eyes.

What did you think when you saw episode 1, "Blue-Eyed Casval"?
I wish that Gihren had blue eyes, too.

I ended up speaking harshly to Kycilia. I hope she won't hold a grudge, but...

I tried to be a kindly big brother, but it didn't go smoothly. It must be my face.

I declare that we will never betray your expectations.

What did you think when you saw episode 1, "Blue-Eyed Casval"?
The intensity of the opening mobile suit battle is overpowering. And so are the eyes of young Casval, brimming with anger and sorrow... I was overwhelmed from beginning to end.

I want to see the completed version right away! It won't be long now.

This time, Dozle is pretty quiet. (laughs) He's burning a great deal of energy on a certain project... I played him with that feeling.

There are several "partings" in this story. You may feel a little bit of heartache. But that's good! It's a good thing! Enjoy it!

What did you think when you saw episode 1, "Blue-Eyed Casval"?
The animation was great, really great! I was so nervous and excited... After it was over, I thought, "I want to see it again right away!" I was emotionally moved, and excited that I myself was involved with such a wonderful work. The night I saw it, my heart was racing.

Thinking about Artesia's feelings, my heart aches. I can't help wondering,"Why...?" And while seeing everyone's performances during the recording process, I've been pondering that.
Was there anything in your performance that you were particularly mindful of? Was there anything different from episode 1?
I was a little conscious of her age. It's really only a little different, but... However, her big brother is still stronger. And scary.

This one is also full of highlights! Thank you for waiting, everyone. You'll definitely be satisfied! I'm thinking, "soon, soon"... (laughs) I'll be looking forward to it along with you!

What did you think when you saw episode 1, "Blue-Eyed Casval"?
I was deeply moved, and it left me in a daze for about two minutes. I don't even remember how I got home afterwards. The quality of the sound and images was overwhelming from beginning to end!

After half a year since episode 1, I felt the tension again. But there were many scenes where I had to raise my voice, and while I was yelling, the tension eased. I'm relieved that I finished it without any problems.
Was there anything in your performance that you were particularly mindful of? Was there anything different from episode 1?
In the story, a few years have passed since episode 1, and so I came to the mic thinking about how Ramba's mental state had changed, the conflict between his feelings and his pride, and how he had followed his own way of life while being at the mercy of the times.

This episode offers a variety of puzzle pieces. Soon, these pieces will begin fitting together, and various pictures will start to take shape. I believe that an image of an infinitely expanding Gundam world will be created inside the heads of everyone who watches this work.

What did you think when you saw episode 1, "Blue-Eyed Casval"?
There are so many characters with their various dramas, but from beginning to end I was transfixed by the overwhelming presence of the boy called Casval.

...She delivered a lot of bitter news, I guess.
Was there anything in your performance that you were particularly mindful of? Was there anything different from episode 1?
In episode 1 she's depicted at her most commanding and powerful, but in episode 2 we catch a glimpse of her inner compassion and sensitivity, so I played that very carefully.
Do you have a message for everyone awaiting the release of episode 2?
Episode 1 was a shocking story, and episode 2... how to put it? It feels like serious matters are moving quietly, with hushed steps, but the threat is steadily advancing. I think you'll experience that in the theater.

What did you think when you saw episode 1, "Blue-Eyed Casval"?
"MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM" was a different kind of work from the good-versus-evil anime aimed at children, and I feel I've seen the origin of that Gundam.

It felt like the era was being handed over to the youngsters.

I thought that, although he'd withdrawn from the front lines of politics, he hadn't grown old and I played him as full of passion.

The origin of Gundam is here! I'm clamoring for it, too!

What did you think when you saw episode 1, "Blue-Eyed Casval"?
Images and sound became one, and I thought it became a work with intensity and depth. Even though I performed in it, the scene where she parts from her children left me in tears... When I listened to the beautiful ending song, the immersion lingered for a while afterwards.
By the way, I met Ms. Miyuki Ichijo, who plays Roselucia, at the preview screening, and we watched it together. Astraia and Roselucia don't have that kind of relationship in the story, but perhaps if they'd met in a different way, they might have become friends like myself and Ms. Miyuki... It's a sad thought.
Tell us about your thoughts after you finished the post-recording of episode 2.
I'm sad that this was where Astraia ended up. She was so lonely. After the post-recording, Mr. Yasuhiko greeted me by saying, "Thank you for your wonderful voice." I was so happy that I cried, and I was overcome by emotion. And having Mr. Shuichi Ikeda call me "Mother" is something I'll remember as long as I live. (laughs)
Was there anything in your performance that you were particularly mindful of? Was there anything different from episode 1?
The basic elements were unchanged from episode 1, but I wanted to clearly express that she was weakening, and to show her feelings for her late husband and for her children who were growing up far away from her.

As the mother of Casval and Artesia, I'd like to continue watching over their fates.

What did you think when you saw episode 1, "Blue-Eyed Casval"?
I went and saw it at the preview screening. The acoustics at the theater were really great! Being able to hear the subtle effects increased the sense of reality. That was true of the opening battle scene, but I particularly recommend the scenes with Deikun and Astraia, which were very realistic.
Tell us about your thoughts after you finished the post-recording of episode 2.
Perhaps it was because it was the first time, but there was a tension in the air during episode 1. This time, there was a good atmosphere during the recording process. Personally, I was delighted to spend the lunch breaks chatting away with Artesia. (Yes, I'm such a typical old geezer.)
Was there anything in your performance that you were particularly mindful of? Was there anything different from episode 1?
Putting it badly, he's an example of a warmonger or career soldier, so I played him as rough and crude. When he laughs, it's less like "Heh heh heh" and more like "Bwa hah hah."
Do you have a message for everyone awaiting the release of episode 2?
(As of July) it's still not finished! I want to see it soon, too! It's being released in October? Can I wait?! Time for a Jet Stream Attack!

What did you think when you saw episode 1, "Blue-Eyed Casval"?
It was really fun! The intensity of the opening battle scene was overwhelming, and I was drawn in as if the burning scent of the chaos at the start of the One Year War was coming out of the screen. I was deeply moved to see the characters that Mr. Yasuhiko depicted in his comic come to life and move around.
Tell us about your thoughts after you finished the post-recording of episode 2.
There was the same tension as last time, but I was really happy that I was able to perform scenes that made an impression and that were just as exciting in the comic. It was also very enjoyable to see (and hear) the performances of such great veterans.
Was there anything in your performance that you were particularly mindful of? Was there anything different from episode 1?
The characters of "THE ORIGIN" have a huge range of facial expressions. At first it might look comical, but somehow it makes them more lively. They're very expressive. I tried to bear that image in mind as much as possible while performing.

In this episode, we finally begin the development of the mobile suit. The Black Tri-Stars are also deeply involved in mobile suit development. Please enjoy the heroic figures of those who ride in the "mobile worker" that precedes the mobile suit!

What did you think when you saw episode 1, "Blue-Eyed Casval"?
First, I was shocked by the beauty of the film! Then my emotions were stirred by the unfolding of the high-tempo story, and by the intense performances of the lineup of actors.

Passionate feelings collided, combined, and intermingled… I'm grateful that I had the chance to participate in the process of breathing life into some of these scenes!
Was there anything in your performance that you were particularly mindful of? Was there anything different from episode 1?
I was conscious of the firm solidarity of the Black Tri-Stars, and of the passion that they put into their fighting. I tried to perform with MAX tension and a slightly higher tone than the other two.

There's a deep sorrow hidden behind all the intense battles. That's where the humanity lives. Enjoy it!

What did you think when you saw episode 1, "Blue-Eyed Casval"?
Watching it as an ordinary viewer, I couldn't believe that I myself would be playing Gundam's Ms. Mirai. I was really astonished. I hope that I'll be able to express Ms. Mirai in my own way so that everyone will enjoy it.
Tell us about your thoughts after you finished the post-recording of episode 2.
There was a tension different from the usual post-recording! I'm looking forward to seeing what the completed form will be like.
Was there anything in your performance that you were particularly mindful of? Was there anything different from episode 1?
I tried not to make my tone too strong, and to maintain her kindness and elegance. I was conscious of trying to convey Ms. Mirai's feminine charm.
Do you have a message for everyone awaiting the release of episode 2?
It's become a really dramatic work in which the passion of the creators emanates from the screen. I believe you'll be able to enjoy it to the fullest if you see all the subtleties of the depiction!

What did you think when you saw episode 1, "Blue-Eyed Casval"?
I was concerned that Amuro is only 15 when he first pilots the Gundam, but he's less than 10 in episode 2, so I wondered whether I could do a good job. I honestly hoped there would be an audition for Amuro.
Tell us about your thoughts after you finished the post-recording of episode 2.
I can't really say much because I haven't objectively watched the complete version, but judging from the feeling of my performance, I believe I was able to create a cute, innocent little Amuro.
Was there anything in your performance that you were particularly mindful of? Was there anything different from episode 1?
In the scene before he begins his life in space with his father, I wanted to express a cheerful, lively boy whose heat is bursting with anticipation, while maintaining Amuro's voice.
Do you have a message for everyone awaiting the release of episode 2?
At last we see a cute little Amuro, who has no idea that in a few years he'll be caught up in a ferocious war and become a plaything of fate! Meanwhile, Casval enters the Zeon forces, intent on revenge. The Universal Century is finally starting to move. Please look forward to it!
